Evžen Zámečník

composer (1939–2018)

Evžen Zámečník was born in Frýdek-Místek in Northern Moravia. In 1956–1961, he studied violin and composition at conservatoire in Brno and after the military service he continued with his studies at Janáček Academy of Performing Arts in Brno under Jan Kapr. He graduated in 1968 and then he got a scholarship for two-year studies of composition at Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in Munich under Günter Bialas.

Having graduated from an external doctorate at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, he worked as a violinist in the orchestra of the opera of Janáček Theatre in Brno and later in State Filharmony in Brno.
In 1982 Evžen Zámečník founded a brass ensemble Brno Brass Band (BBB), the first of its kind in our country where he was an artistic director and conductor. In 1989–1994 he was a dramaturg of the National Theatre Opera in Brno and then until 2003, he was a director of conservatoire in Brno.

His composing style was first close to neo-classicism, later it was enriched with contemporary composing techniques. The author of chamber, orchestral and theatre music and also compositions for wind orchestras always wanted his compositions to instantly address and emotionally reach its audience. His advantage was that he could value his compositions also from the point of view of an interpreter. He wrote a number of compositions for his instrument, violin.
