Zbyněk Matějů

composer (born 1958)

He was born on 1st May 1958 in the town of Rychnov nad Kněžnou where he also finished his grammar school studies.

He studied composition at the Prague Conservatory and at AMU (Academy of Performing Arts), where he graduated in 1985. To enhance his education in composition, he took private lessons with Petr Eben, Svatopluk Havelka and took part in a course led by Z. Rudzinski.

During his career as a composer he has been awarded many prizes both home and abroad (His victory in the “Donauballett 1994” competition in Amsterdam led to a commission of a ballet composition for the Holland Dance Festival – the work was first performed in October 1995 at the renowned Nederlands Dans Theater).

At the end of the year 1999 he was awarded the UNESCO price for his work in the field of music theatre. After having successfully finished his three-year internal postgraduate studies at the Department of Music Theory and History (at AMU), he started to work as a pedagogue at the Prague Conservatory – from 1991.

In 1993 he was commissioned to create a composition for the French Ensemble Fractal, and the invitation to the French premiere of the work was followed by an invitation to lecture at the conservatories in Tours and Chinon and at the university in Tours. Shortly after his return from France, the composer decided to concentrate solely on his compositional career. His cooperation with the film industry prevented potential negative existential consequences of this decision.
