Czech Radio Celebrates Another Success at an International Competition

10. prosinec 2010

The European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion, launched in the EU countries, Norway and Insland, included a great number of various activities and projects and one of them was also the announcement of a competition for journalists who are covering such topics as the poverty and social exclusion. After the recent Association of International Broadcasting Prize awarded to Stanislav Motl in London, the Czech Radio editors received another International award.

Having evaluated all the articles and reports according to the set criteria, the jury of the competition for journalists covering the poverty came to the conclusion that the winners of the European Year Journalist Award 2010: Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion, for the category Audiovisual Media, are Czech Radio – Radio Wave editors Mrs Ivana Veselkova and Mrs Zuzana Rejchova with their report “Record you! With a microphone” about the Homeless Football Cup taking place in June in Prague.

There were also other places in different categories awarded within the European Year Journalist Award 2010. For the category Audiovisual Media the jury decided to award only the first and second prizes due to the low number of registered programmes. The second place was awarded to Mr Alexis Rosenzweig from the French section of Czech Radio 7 – Radio Prague for his report “Panorama – The Difficult Return of the Roma People from Canada back to the city of Vimperk”.

The winner of the European round will be announced on the 17th December 2010 during the ceremonial meeting in Brusels. The European Commissioner for the Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion, Mr László Andor, said: “If we want to combat poverty, we need to let those who are socially excluded speak. We need to understand the causes of poverty and also come up with a new and efficient solution. Journalists play a key role in the debate and for this reason we have announced the journalist competition for the most contributing and original report on the topic of poverty.”

For the national competition in the Czech Republic , there were 16 journalists with 19 articles registered for the category Press and Online Media and for the category Audiovisual Media there were 4 reports by 5 authors submitted. The victory of the Czech Radio – Radio Wave editors is a great success for Czech Radio.
