Jan Vičar

Jan Vičar, born in Olomouc, is a professor of music at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague and at the Musicology Department of Palacký University in Olomouc.

As a Fulbright/CIES scholar-in-residence he lectured at eight American Universities (1998–1999) and as a visiting professor he taught composition and music theory at Birmingham-Southern College, Alabama (2005). He founded an international festival of contemporary music MusicOlomouc and in 2009-2014 he was the director of the festival.

He is the author of more than seventy compositions of various genres that were performed not only in the Czech Republic but also in the USA, Canada, Chile, Japan, South Korea and many European countries. Five authorial CDs with his work - We Sing, Vivat Universitas!, Fortissimo, Preludes/Phantasms and Hey, Johnny! - have been published. His work for choirs is particularly successful. He also devotes himself to musicology.
