Afro-electro
This edition of the Friday Ripple is 100% electronic, and 100% African. Check out the mother continent in the digital era, with a 2-hour mix of Shangaan electro, kuduro, coupé-décalé, zouglou, house and kwaito.
The first half of the set is dedicated to two African rave cultures. First of all, there’s the Shangaan Electro/Tsonga Disco scene of Southern Africa: wild party music with tempos reaching up to 180BPM. This summer saw the first official European release of this music, on UK label Honest Jon’s compilation Shangaan Electro: New Wave Dance Music From South Africa. You’ll find 4 tracks from this terrific new album in the mix, as well as some harder-to-get Shangaan tunes.
The only thing that can really follow that is kuduro: Angola’s unique techno scene, which has spread to Europe through Portugal’s Angolan population. Kuduro sits at a relatively mellow 140 BPM: in other words, more extremely fast music.

The second half is a little more pop: coupé-décalé and zouglou from Cote d’Ivoire, Congolese and South African house and, somewhat inevitably for this show, some kwaito favourites.
It’s all available for streaming right now on the Radio Wave Jukebox, under Friday Ripple 17.10.2010. Here’s the playlist:
