Collaborations; gay stuff
2 shows in one this week. Most of the show is dedicated to collaborations, and most of it's what you'd expect... kicking off with some Brazilian/Moroccan breakbeat-dub from Maga Bo & Bigg and some trumpet-driven Zulu/Columbian hip hop from Zuluboy & Ephniko, we take a global trip through neo-soul, hip hop, dub, nu-klezmer, and more.
It's an upbeat set covering everything from African hip hop to the North American "queercore" punk scene, going out live at 5pm CET on Friday 30th October.
Sandwiched in the middle, there's a half-hour set called: That's SO gay!
JUKEBOX: Friday Ripple 30.10.09
The annual Mezipatra Queer Film Festival is in Brno this weekend, and arrives in Prague next week. They're breaking down stereotypes about gay, lesbian and transgender identity, so let's try and do a bit of the same.
Pansy Division, the punk band who brought the queercore gay punk movement to a wide audience in the 1990s, are back in 2009 with a 6th album, That's So Gay. In American teenage slang "That's so gay" is a homophobic insult meaning "that's uncool", so Pansy Division are reclaiming the phrase as their own. Elsewhere in this section, a lot of gay Canadians: Kids On TV and Lesbians On Ecstasy take queercore into the electro era, while The Hidden Cameras bring some jangly guitar rock.
Some of the songs here are quite sexually explicit, but no more so than mainstream hip hop. And talking of hip hop... why no gay hip hop star yet? While even heavy metal has Judas Priest's Rob Halford, there's not one prominent gay hip hop star, and the hip hop scene is still filled with homophobia .
Hip hop clearly needs a gay icon, so here's a suggestion...
First, take a look at this classic pop video from 1979: In The Navy by gay disco icons The Village People. Then take a look at this fabulous video from 2008: Rider Pt. 2 by the rather homophobic 50 Cent and G Unit.
Same video? Oh yes. We can only say: Mr Cent, that's SO gay! Please come out of the closet already.

The Friday Ripple: alternative music with no boundaries, national, sexual or otherwise. The full show is streaming now on the Radio Wave Jukebox under Friday Ripple > 30.10.2009.
