Miriam Makeba – Tribute To Mama Africa

9. listopad 2012

Miriam Makeba played an important role in fighting apartheid in South Africa. The outspoken civil rights activist used her music to help dismantle the South African regime of the 1960s.

As Miriam Makeba gained international recognition, the government forced her into a 30 year exile. The Friday Ripple family paid special tribute to Miriam Makeba, who passed away on the 9th of November, 2008. We opened the show with Nomankanjani, made famous by South Africa’s Brenda Fassie who many called “The Queen Of African Pop.”

Invited for this special Miriam Makeba Tribute Show, was Lucie Kostelecká who is also inspired by the principles set by Miriam Makeba. The Czech singer is very familiar to the Friday Ripple, having had an earlier interview on the 24th of August 2012. Lucie Kostelecká brought good news of the first ever Tribute To Mama Africa. Concert to be held at Prague’s exclusive Clarion Hotel on the 15th of November 2012 from 8pm CET. On the evening, Lucie Kostelecká backed by the M.A.T (Mama Africa Tribute) Band will perform live Pata Pata and Chicken in memory of the late Miriam Makeba. The Friday Ripple Family was invited to dance to the rhythm of Africa at the Tribute To Mama Africa. Listeners had the opportunity to win one of the five tickets kindly offered by Lucie Kostelecká.

Miriam Makeba was known as “Mama Africa”, and in her memory we played the The Click Song. It is known to the Xhosa people of South Africa as the Qongqothwana, a traditional song they sing during weddings.

Zahara is a young South African Afrosoul singer and songwriter. From her debut album Loliwe, Zahara has engraved her name in the history of African music.

Also performing at the Tribute To Mama Africa is Nigerian wonder boy, Teddy Ziggy. Time to expect an explosive show at the Clarion Hotel on the 15th of November!

We closed the show with Can’t Let You Go from Uganda duo, Radio & Weasel.
