Kalindula Rhythms
Kalindula is a popular genre in south-central Africa. Originally developed in Zambia the traditional rhythmic sounds of Kalindula have a a distinctive up tempo hand crafted guitar known locally as the Banjo. As Zambia prepares to celebrate 48 years of independence from former colonial masters, Britain on 24th of October, 2012 this was the perfect opportunity to present Kalindula music.
We opened the show with the late P. K. Chishala who was known to many as Professor Kalumba Chishala. He is respected for single handedly popularizing Kalindula music setting the precedent for other artists to follow. It is not surprising to still hear songs like Iminofu Yambowa in many Zambian homes. Even though most of his songs were written and produced as far back as the 80s, they are often easy to relate to today’s society.
Sakala Brothers comprise of unrelated Moses Sakala and Levey Sakala. The duo started out as dancers of the famous Amayenge Band. Angelina is a love song that is among their best work in a career that has spanned 26 years.
Angela Nyirenda is following the footsteps of the Sakala Brothers who discovered and produce her music. Through her music, Angela has become a role model to many youths. Khuzwayo is a smooth mid tempo Kalindula she has sung for her son.
Moving to current times, Afunika is the modern day King of the new Kalindula style that incorporates the modern electric guitar, bass and drum set. After the release of his debut album Malinso, Afunika has found his voice in the Zambian industry that has almost forgotten Kalindula music. Ichiselema is expected to be part of his unreleased second album.
We followed up with a segment of Soukous music that originates from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Koffi Olomide is a Soukous singer, dancer, compare and producer who over the years together with his Quartier Latin Band have entertained the world with Soukous music and dance. We included Abracadabra the latest from DR Congo’s most respect artist.
Koffi Olomide has nurtured many like Fally Ipupa as the future of Soukous music. Fally Ipupa takes the world in Sexy Dance featuring Kyrs.
We discovered that Soukous is known by different names depending on which part of Africa. It is known as Rumba or Kwasa Kwasa in southern and east Africa. Toofan from Togohave developed a unique Soukous sub-genre called Ogbragada that fuses Hip Hop. You will notice the similarity to Soukous music in Come On Man byTogo’s most followed music group.
We closed the show on a high note with a new Afrohouse collaboration mix between Angolan Dj Silyvi and African Roots of South Africa. Enjoy the comical video.
